The distance education mode was adopted by many universities to meet the growing demand of students who lacked the means to pursue higher education through the mainstream. In addition, there are economic constraints. Consequently, many universities in India in various regions began correspondence courses or programs through grades, the development of a system of evaluation of answer sheets. The success of these courses for the establishment of Indira Gandhi National Open University, which is now considered one of the best college courses at a distance in the world.
Due to the limitations of the formal education system, politicians were drawn to the unconventional ways of providing non-residential education studies and correspondence courses. The distance education mode, in which there is no need to bring all students to listen to face to face classes, it is considered worthwhile. However, in the distance education system, provision of regular meetings between faculty and the student does. These meetings are popularly known as personal contact programs (PCP). Students receive their study material via postal services to study at home or workplace. The student efforts are complemented by the tasks, which are reviewed and evaluated by experts in the subject matter. Therefore, correspondence education is a piece of open education. Distance education system is also known by other common names, such as correspondence courses, correspondence education, distance education and external appearance or private, etc. The education system is suitable for people wishing to improve their skills, but were unable to attend classes regularly. These distance learning courses proved a blessing for people in service and others eager to pursue higher education. As a result, a large number of people in the service, professionals, entrepreneurs, young, less work, school teachers, housewives and elderly people went right to free admission to the curriculum of distance education .
The term distance education was formally recognized in 1982 when the four-decade-old International Council for Correspondence Education was renamed the International Council for Distance Education. The old concept of distance education is associated exclusively with the media, while the new concept of distance education includes supplemental material is used through non-print media, as well as radio, television, computers, laptops, CD through projectors, video lessons and satellites. These institutions can be called a dual-mode institutions.
Now today, India has two types of distance education institutions.
They are: 1. Correspondence courses institutions.
2. Open universities.
Distance education is overwhelming response from India, introduced many new universities distance education courses oriented work according to changing times and needs of students. However, in this process, the real reason for a quality education for all took the back seat as the main focus of the universities gradually went on to make more money. Currently in India, Distance Education departments are generating the maximum revenue for universities, in many cases, even more than the funding of vocational courses and of itself.
The only thing that can be verified that the authorities of the universities providing distance education courses must ensure that strong institutions of higher education is not limited to obtaining the distribution of the institutes. So the universities and distance higher authorities maintain that quality education should only be provided through distance education programs. In the case of research-based higher education or other vocational courses are run through distance education, provisions should be made to the library, laboratory and related studies required equipment and materials essential to students in coordination with other related universities with similar programs or are in the same region. Rather, it would be more appropriate for an inter-university is set by the UGC or the International Council for Distance Education in India coordinated by the related government education authorities to monitor and review distance education programs by different universities and to ensure the smooth running of distance education.
Correspondence courses institutions are offering over 400 programs in India, about 50 percent of which are of a professional. Enrollment in these institutions is around 9,00,000 in 1999, constituting 11.64 percent of the total enrollment in higher education in the country. An important point to note here is that the rate of growth of enrollment in correspondence and distance education mode has been greater than that of higher education in general (Period ,1990-2000, UGC-Source Reports).

The world of technology is being renovated by global trends such as convergence, greater bandwidth, enhanced multimedia capabilities, miniaturization, environmental changes, increased mobility, improved processing, cognitive tools more powerful and cost reduced. So we can say that the distance education mode has become very popular and common in India because it is addressing a wide range of applicants (students) who are willing to improve their education for various reasons. The distance education system provides opportunities not only for younger students, but also to those of older age groups. The main reasons for growing interest in distance education is the need for continuing education in today's competitive world. Every people always try to add value to their competence in their attempt to advance their vehicle. Distance Education is also very cheap compared to the normal mode of education. Distance education has been greatly reduced in the wall of the gap between education and a normal student, beyond the distance of your home or workplace to college. Now you only need very little to increase the need to make it professional and employability of the educational community.
